The Padres announced this evening that they've placed outfielder Jackson Merrill on the 10-day injured list with a left ankle sprain, and infielder Will Wagner was the corresponding move.
We have recalled INF Will Wagner from Triple-A El Paso.
Wagner went straight to triple-A after the trade, and in 17 games with El Paso, slashed .270/.333/.405 with two home runs and 17 RBIs.
San Diego landed Wagner in exchange for catching prospect Brandon Valenzuela, who has a .683 OPS through 11 games with the Blue Jays' triple-A Buffalo affiliate.
Will Wagner talks about being traded from the Blue Jays to the Padres, getting acclimated to the organization at AAA, and his potential role with the team after being called up earlier today.
"A little shocked for sure, wasn't expecting to get traded. Didn't hear any rumors about me getting traded," Wagner told 97.3 The Fan upon joining the Padres. "I loved a lot of those guys in Toronto, but I'm excited to be here and be a Padre."
Before the trade, the 27-year-old Wagner had split time between Toronto and Buffalo. In 40 games with the Blue Jays in 2025, he hit .237 with seven doubles and 15 walks.
Toronto originally acquired Wagner from the Houston Astros as part of the return for Yusei Kikuchi at the 2024 trade deadline.
Now, Wagner will join the NL West-leading Padres as they wrap up a three-game set against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday afternoon.
"I just want to help contribute to the team as best as I can. Whenever my name's called, be ready," Wagner said when asked about his goals in San Diego. "Be ready to play second, first, third, wherever they want me, I'll be ready."
