The Royals honour our very own Buck Martinez, who played for them from 1969-1977 👏
While Buck is known for his long association with Toronto as a player, announcer, and manager, he actually broke into the major leagues as an original member of the Royals in 1969, playing with them for parts of eight seasons and becoming a valuable member of their playoff teams of the 1970s.
The Royals' public address announcer told the crowd of Buck's history with the Royals and the Kansas City faithful rightfully gave him a standing ovation.

Transitioned to broadcasting after on-field collision, began 2nd career

After being traded to the Cardinals and then the Brewers in 1977, Martinez joined the Blue Jays in 1981, where he played the final six seasons of his career. In 1985, he famously completed a double play after breaking his ankle following a collision at home plate.
July 9, 1985 - In a 9-4 win over the @Mariners, Buck Martinez tagged out Phil Bradley on a throw from @JesseBarfield29, but broke his ankle in the collision. Sitting on the ground in agony, he still managed to tag out Gorman Thomas for a double play.
Soon after his release from the team, he joined the Blue Jays as an announcer and after taking some voice and acting classes, became a fixture in Toronto's booth.
Buck's leave of absence is the second one he has taken in recent years as his battles have started to take their toll.
However, he has not announced any future plans, including retirement and plans to stay with the Jays throughout the final week as well as the postseason.
