Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Cody Ponce is contemplating an offer from Team Mexico to play in the World Baseball Classic.
Blue Jays pitcher Cody Ponce is keeping an eye on the 2026 World Baseball Classic and is weighing an offer to play for Team Mexico, but has yet to decide on any future plans.
The newly signed right-hander spoke to the Foul Territory Podcast on Friday and said that before committing to anything down the line, he first needs to talk with his new team.
Cody Ponce said he got an offer from Team Mexico to play in the 2026 WBC, but he's not 100% sure if he'll participate. "I have to talk to my team [Blue Jays] and see what they want to do, and their best wishes for me."
Earlier this month, Ponce signed a three-year, $30-million deal with the Blue Jays after spending the last five years pitching in Japan and South Korea, most recently with the Hanwha Eagles of the KBO League.
Cody Ponce says his wife manifested the EXACT contract he got from the Blue Jays. 🤯
Ponce can't wait to learn from his new teammates in Toronto
Following a run to the World Series, Toronto has had quite an active off-season.
While retaining Shane Bieber for one more year, the Blue Jays also signed pitcher Dylan Cease on a seven-year, $210 million deal.
Cody Ponce says he can't wait to learn from guys like Dylan Cease and Shane Bieber in Toronto. 🤝
If Ponce accepts the offer from Team Mexico, he would be joining a few new teammates, including Vladimir Guerrero Jr., George Springer and Jose Berrios, who have already committed to playing in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
