Even after it was learned earlier this week that the Toronto Blue Jays had agreed to a five-year deal worth at least $92.5M with outfielder Anthony Santander, TSN's Scott Mitchell reported that free-agent first baseman Pete Alonso was "still in play" for the Blue Jays even though it's believed they want to sign first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to an extension.
According to MLB insider Jon Morosi, the Blue Jays are still not done with their off-season as they are looking to add a couple more players in which both Pete Alonso and Jurickson Profar are attracting attention from Toronto.
SNY editor Danny Abriano noted that the Mets are not overly interested in resigning Alonso "refusing to offer more because they're done bidding against themselves and believe their offer is fair."
With Vladimir Guerrero Jr. entering his contract year, the Blue Jays have a limited window of opportunity to convince the slugger to stay.
Coming off a last-place finish, the team has to improve quickly in a loaded American League East.
Alonso, 30, has 226 home runs in his six-year career. Only Aaron Judge has hit more in that time frame.
He's got game-changing power, and he's also never missed more than 10 games due to injury or rest in a single big-league season.
If the Blue Jays can land Alonso on a three-year contract with a player option after each of the first two seasons, they'll at the very least show Vladimir Guerrero Jr that they care about winning this year.
And if the tandem proves to be effective, they can work on locking up either slugger, or both, long-term.
