NPB All-Stars Kazuma and Munetaka Murakami will face each other for the first time as MLB rookies in the Chicago White Sox home opener vs the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday.

Kazuma Okamoto, an 11-year veteran of Japan’s Yomiuri Giants, and Munetaka Murakami, who spent eight seasons with the Yakult Swallows, are making their MLB debuts as established stars from Nippon Professional Baseball.
With that, lets compare the two rookies as they embark on their new MLB journey.
Murakami, 26, has an impressive track record in Japan, hitting .273 over 3,516 at-bats with 598 runs, 265 home runs, 722 RBIs, and 76 stolen bases.
His plate discipline has been a standout feature, posting a 16% career walk rate, although his strikeout rate has risen in recent years (28.1%, 29.5%, and 27.0% over the past three seasons), likely reflecting a more aggressive power approach.
Injuries have been a factor for Murakami, including recovery from elbow surgery and a broken toe entering last season, followed by an oblique issue that sidelined him for half of 2025.
Despite that, he has consistently hit 30 or more home runs in five different seasons.
The White Sox signed him to a two-year, $34 million deal, betting that he can regain his early-career contact rate to maximize his offensive ceiling.
Early returns in 2026 show Murakami in 6 games (31 plate appearances) batting .238 with 5 hits, 3 home runs, 4 walks, and 5 strikeouts, producing a strong OPS of 1.027.
THREE MLB GAMES THREE HOME RUNS Munetaka Murakami is blasting baseballs to start his MLB career 😤
Okamoto, 29, brings a similar level of experience, having spent 11 seasons with the Yomiuri Giants.
Over 5,010 at-bats, he compiled 698 runs, 277 home runs, 872 RBIs, and 14 stolen bases while maintaining a solid .274 batting average.
His walk rate of 10.2% and strikeout rate of 18.3% highlight a balanced offensive approach. From 2018 to 2024, Okamoto consistently hit 30 or more home runs, peaking with 41 in 2023 over 503 at-bats.
Last season, Okamoto missed nearly half the year due to a sprained left elbow, yet he still hit .322 with 39 home runs over 270 at-bats.
Historically durable, he played at least 140 games in six of his previous seven seasons.
The Blue Jays signed him to a four-year, $60 million deal in January, recognizing his combination of power, contact, and defensive skill.
Okamoto’s flyball-oriented swing (over 50% over the past three seasons) and hard-hit rate around 32% make him a formidable presence in Toronto’s lineup.
Through 6 games in 2026 (27 plate appearances), Okamoto is off to a .292 start with 7 hits, 2 home runs, 3 walks, and 11 strikeouts, producing an OPS of .912.
A moment Kazuma Okamoto will remember forever 👏
Positioned one slot behind Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Okamoto should see ample opportunities to drive in runs, though he will still face a learning curve adjusting to MLB pitching.
His projected profile suggests a neutral batting average with solid power potential, approximately an 80/25/80 projection.
While Murakami’s game leans toward a “boom or bust” power approach, Okamoto offers a more reliable combination of contact and power.
Defensively, Okamoto provides greater versatility, whereas Murakami is likely to fit the designated hitter role more frequently.
That’s a fantastic play by Kazuma Okamoto
Today’s matchup marks the first chapter in what could become an exciting rivalry between two of Japan’s finest hitters now showcasing their talents on baseball’s biggest stage.
