Left-handed pitcher Justin Bruihl has been recalled in his place.
Schultz didn't get into a game in his most recent stint with the Toronto Blue Jays and now will likely finish the year at the team's complex in Florida.
As someone who can give the Blue Jays length, he was likely recalled as insurance for the Blue Jays in their bullpen game against the Boston Boston Red Sox on Thursday. With Louis Varland and Eric Lauerr holding down the fort with 5.1 innings between them and with Shane Bieber on the hill tonight, The Blue Jays would rather have fresh arm who can give them shorter stints.
Blue Jays are swapping out bullpen depth. Justin Bruihl is up, Paxton Schultz is optioned.
Bruihl is another pitcher who has shuttled between Triple-A Buffalo and Toronto all year after first having his contract selected in June.
Bruihl has appeared in 14 games over four separate stints in the bullpen this season. While his 5.68 ERA and 2.05 WHIP aren't anything to write home about, Bruihl does provide a fresh, rested arm for the final three games of the season.
Bruihl provides third lefty option of pen', relief for overworked arms
Bruihl is also left-handed, which serves the Blue Jays well should they want an alternative to Brendon Little. The reliable lefty has appeared in 77 games this season and, alongside rookie Mason Mason Fluharty has had great results, with some fluctuations in between.
While it's unknown if Bruihl will be called upon during these final three games, having a fresh arm is never a bad thing, especially considering how overworked the bullpen has been in the last few months.
