First, it was the Los Angeles Dodgers. Now, the Chicago Cubs appear to be beating the Blue Jays in the race for pitching help.
Just days after the Jays showed interest in Houston Astros closer Ryan Pressly, the right-hander is heading to Chicago's North Side. In exchange, the Astros are receiving right-handed prospect Juan Bello.
Pressly, who holds 10-5 rights, agreed to waive his full no-trade clause, allowing the deal to go through.
What ultimately swayed Pressly to Chicago was the opportunity to close games again. He had previously served as the Astros' closer before losing that role last season.
The Astros are also sending the Cubs $5.5 million to help cover the remainder of Pressly's contract, as well as tax differences between Illinois and Texas.
This move is significant for Houston, as it frees up both salary and roster space, potentially increasing their chances of re-signing star third baseman Alex Bregman, who remains unsigned.
For his career Pressly is 35-36 with a 3.27 ERA and 112 saves.
