The Toronto Blue Jays are set to make a decision about Daulton Varsho. The Blue Jays centre fielder, and reigning gold glove winner, has been out since the start of the year as he recovers from off-season rotator cuff surgery.
According to Sportsnet's Arden Zwelling, the Jays and manager John Schneider will make a decision as early as Thursday as to whether Varsho joins the team for their weekend series in New York against the Yankees, or whether they will wait until Monday.
While the Blue Jays have always proceeded with caution when it comes to injured players, given the state of their lineup and lack of hitting, it may be worth their while to activate Varsho sooner, rather than later.
Today will be the key. Varsho has played two games in Triple-A Buffalo, DHing one and starting in centre in the other. If his arm is strong enough to play in back-to-back days, that would be seen as the final box to check in Varsho's recovery, and could tilt the scales to have him make his season debut this weekend.
The Blue Jays are 29th in the home runs, with 13. While Varsho only hit 19 last year, he clubbed four in Spring Training, to lead the team.
With Varsho's return imminent, the Blue Jays face a difficult decision on who will be sent down in a corresponding move. The likely casualty is Addison Barger. While he showed off his great defence, with Varsho occupying centre full time, it means a move back to right for Springer, which would leave Varsho the odd man out.
Nathan Lukes also hasn't had the strongest to his season, but he is slightly more versatile in the outfield.
