Even with Spring Training underway, the Toronto Blue Jays are keeping things busy on the free agent front.
According to the team's official transaction log, they have signed right handed pitcher Angel Ynfante to a minor league deal.
As of right now, it does not appear that it includes an invite to Spring Training.
The signing is dated February 13th but was just posted Monday.
An example of perseverance in baseball
Blue Jays consciously getting more international
There is very little information available about Infante but a few things are known.
Ynfante was originally signed by the Colorado Rockies in December of 2023, likely as an international free agent.
Still just 20 years old, the righty comes from Altagracia, Venezuela and is likely still several years away from the major leagues.
Although he allegedly was stationed with the DSL Rockies in the Dominican Republic, neither MLB nor Baseball Reference have any stats listed for him.
Still, there's no harm in the Blue Jays making a move of this nature. It's a low-risk, low-cost depth move that has the potential for high reward.
The signing of Infante also fits with the Blue Jays consciously becoming a more international team.
At the beginning of the year's international free agent signing period in mid-January, Toronto signed players from at least eight different nations.
And while Infante may never see action in a major league game, he will be an intriguing and exciting prospect to watch over the coming years.
