The Toronto Blue Jays have signed another young pitcher out of Latin America. The team's transaction page now includes the name Gabriel Brito, who is a 17 year old pitcher from Barquisimeto, Venezuela. Like most of these signings, he was assigned to the DSL Blue Jays in the Dominican League.
Very little is known about Brito, although his page indicates that is currently on the restricted this. While there could be a number of causes for this, it is likely with his age and visa issues, problems that tend to be relatively common with players of that age and from that area of the world.
The Dominican Summer League Blue Jays are considered a rookie level affiliate and play at the Boca Chica Complex along with the Diamondbacks, Orioles, White Sox and Reds. The DSL is the only Latin-based summer league.
A majority of the Blue Jays' Caribbean-based IFA's, particularly those under the age of 20, start their careers at this complex.
Other notable names on the current roster include catcher Reynel Campos, shortstop Kennew Blanco, and outfielder Andres Arias.
While most of the Blue Jays' minor transactions involve players like Brito, there was one other notable move was that of Tommy Nance. After being outrighted to Buffalo following his opening day DFA, the Bisons have placed him on the temporary inactive list.
The temporary inactive list means he is not actively playing in games with the team, likely due to a non-injury related reason like travel, a short-term assignment, or other team-related logistics.
Minor moves like these often go unnoticed, but every transaction, however minor, has the ability to affect the team's future.
No word yet on if and when Nance will be activated.
