The Chicago Cubs have once again added infielder Ben Cowles to their organization, claiming him off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday.
The Chicago Cubs have brought infielder Ben Cowles back to Wrigleyville for yet another stint with the franchise.
The Cubs announced that they've claimed INF Ben Cowles back off waivers from the #BlueJays. That puts their 40-man roster at 39, with Max Scherzer expected to officially join the team soon.
Cubs continual roster moves may see Cowles DFA'd before opening day
The Blue Jays had only recently claimed Cowles themselves, but his stay north of the border was brief.
While there was no public announcement that the Blue Jays had designated him for assignment, the timing suggests the club needed roster flexibility with eight-time All-Star Max Scherzer set to rejoin the team.
Originally selected by the New York Yankees in the 10th round of the 2021 MLB Draft, Cowles first joined the Cubs organization at the 2024 trade deadline.
He was one of two prospects sent to Chicago in exchange for reliever Mark Leiter Jr..
Since then, Cowles has bounced around via waiver claims. He was designated for assignment by the Cubs last September and subsequently picked up by the Chicago White Sox.
In January, however, the Cubs reclaimed him from their crosstown rivals, continuing a series of transactions that have defined much of his professional journey.
Despite the frequent movement, the 26-year-old has yet to make his Major League debut.
Cowles put up solid production in the lower minors earlier in his career, but he has struggled to find consistency at Triple-A, posting a .235/.299/.368 slash line across 536 plate appearances.
While the offensive numbers leave room for improvement, Cowles offers versatility and speed.
He has stolen 70 bases in 92 attempts during his minor-league career and brings defensive flexibility, logging time at shortstop, second base, third base, and even brief appearances in the outfield.
Given his track record, Cowles could once again find himself in roster limbo if the Cubs require another 40-man move.
Still, Chicago's repeated interest suggests the organization values his athleticism and versatility.
Whether that eventually translates into a long-awaited Major League opportunity may depend on injuries or evolving roster needs during the season.
