Daulton Varsho named among top MLB centre fielders

MLB released its annual Top 10 Players Right Now list on Tuesday, and it began by unveiling its pick for centre fielder.

With the possible exception of Garrett Mitchell none of the names on the list should come as much of surprise.

Mariners stars Julio Rodriguez tops out at number one, followed by Orioles phenom Jackson Merrill and Twins speedster Byron Buxton. Mike Trout, in spite of his injuries over the last few years, sits in fifth place. Daulton Varsho is seventh.

Last year's top choice for best centre fielder, Aaron Judge, is not on this year's list as he moving back to right field.

While some Jays fans might be surprised to see Varsho on this list, especially considering his decline in offence in 2024, he is one of the premier defenders in the game. This was evidenced by his winning a Gold Glove for centre field.

He became the sixth Blue Jay to win the award for outfield, and 2nd in a row, following Kevin Kiermaier's win in 2023. He also won two Fielding Bible awards in 2024.

Varsho led the majors last year in dWAR for a position player in 2024 with 3.13 and finished with 5.1 overall WAR, 2nd highest on the Blue Jays behind only Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
