In the weeks since Smith's 11th inning home run lead the Dodgers to victory over the Blue Jays in dramatic in Game 7 of the World Series, much has been made of IKF's lead at third base, or lack thereof.
Many felt that he could have. - and should have - scored on a ground ball that was hit to 2nd baseman
Miguel Rojas. Instead, he was out at home plate by mere inches.
So too has Will Smith, the Dodgers catcher, whose ability to keep his toes on home plate allowed the out call on IKF to stand, and push Game 7 further into extra innings.
Dodgers C Will Smith doesn't fault Blue Jays' IKF for short lead at third base
Dodgers catcher Will Smith was on the Rich Eisen Show on Wednesday explaining his thoughts on the play
He's gotta stay close, in case of the back pick, line drive...thats typical baseball 101 on that
Smith goes on to say that it was a tough spot for Kiner-Falefa to be in, especially when the outcome was falling a couple inches sort.
I don't think he did anything wrong, that's just how it has to be
Nothing IKF could have done differently
While IKF presumably knows and realizes this as well, it is good to feel validated, especially by a member of the opposing team.
While the validation is important, it will always leave the Blue Jays with a sense of 'whatt if?"
