#SIGNVLADDY. It was a hashtag seen throughout the offseason and into April as Blue Jays were desperate for the team to do something, anything, to lock down their homegrown superstar. Now that the Jays have finally signed Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a long-term extension - with news breaking at 1AM ET - many fans are sharing their thoughts.
The majority of the reactions were positive.
@CLTJaysFancan wrote "It's something the franchise absolutely, without a doubt, had to get done. Maybe it's an overpay, who cares, it needed to happen."
@kathypom54 concurred writing "Had to be done if the Jay's want to be considered a serious franchise. Is it an overpay? Yes, but he's a homegrown talent, and although I've doubted the term and $, I'm happy. Now Vlad, it's time to hit like a $500M dollar man. The ball is in your court.»
Not everyone shared this view however. Many feel the contract was too little too late and will come back to haunt them. @Dale07149987 referred to the whole thing as a tire fire.
The biggest source of disagreement seemed to stem from the length of the contract. Fans aren't as big on contracts of 10+ years as players and owners are. Many players signed to these types of deals don't see the whole the thing or see their production decline. Albert Pujols was a perfect example of this.
As Larry Glaim wrote on Facebook "Lots of players out there that can play 1st base and hit as good as he has been doing for a lot less money . we could use that money for better pitchers . as of now it looks like a replay of last year"
You can't please everybody. At least now the focus will be back on playing baseball again.
