Whit Merrifield, who suited up for Toronto in 2022 and 2023, appeared on the 6ix inning stretch podcast and took some time to blast the decision by manager John Schneider.
«I am so glad that Jose came out and showed his frustration, and showed that he's pissed off about what has happened. Because now I can be pissed, «If Jose's pissed, it is a deserving reason to be pissed. Every single day, that man steps into the locker room, that man is doing what he can to be a better baseball player, to help his team, and to be a better teammate.»
While Merrifield is certainly qualified to voice his opinion and is correct about Berrios being a good teammate, Berrios himself said that he is putting the team ahead of his own personal feelings.
Did the #BlueJays do José Berrios dirty by moving him to the pen?
@WhitMerrifield isn't happy about seeing the hardest-working player on the team demoted during a pennant race.
While Merrifield had some success in Toronto, there were always questions about his locker room presence and how good of a teammate he actually was.
No room for Berrios on postseason roster
Berrios has also been less than impressive this season, going 9-5 with an ERA over 4.00 prior to being placed on the IL. With the starting rotation being to three - possibly four - during the postseason, there simply wasn't room, or time for Berrios to get to where he needed to be.
Merrifield was quick to add that no one works harder than the veteran starting pitcher.
«That's the kind of guy you rally behind. That's the kind of guy that teams gather and say, 'I don't care what's going on with me. When this guy's pitching, I'm giving it what I got for this guy because he deserves it and I don't want to let him down.'»
While Berrios clearly has a former teammate in his corner, it's the results that matter most. And they simply haven't been there.
