The SSeattle Mariners have announced that they have designated right-hander Casey Lawrence for assignment. His spot will be filled by fellow right-hander Troy Taylor, who is being reinstated from the 15 Day IL.
Lawrence picked up the win after pitching the final three innings of a game on April 9th after having his contract purchased by the Mariners.
Although he is 37, Lawrence has limited big league experience after making his debut with the
Blue Jays in 2017, after being signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2010. He posted decent numbers in Dunedin, but couldn't keep up the success as he worked his way through the ranks.
He finally made it to the big leagues at the age of 29, garnering an 8.78 ERA in four games before being designated for assignment. He was claimed by the Mariners in May. After appearing in 34 games over two seasons, he left for Japan, spending 2019 with the Hiroshima Tokyo Carp.
After being out of baseball three years, he re-appeared with the Blue Jays in 2022, appearing in another six games and pitching to a 7.50 ERA. He played for
St. Louis in 2023, before returning to Seattle in 2024.
Although he will likely reject a minor league assignment and become a free agent, it's possible that he re-signs a minor league deal with the Mariners, especially since he is already living in the Seattle/Tacoma area.
Lawrence has the capacity to be a starter as well as long and middle relief and could be a short-term asset for any team.
The Mariners have seven days to trade, release, or outright him.
For his career, Lawrence is 5-4 with a 6.73 ERA in 60 games, including two starts and 97 strikeouts in 127 innings.
