Former Blue Jays pitcher gets a statue outside stadium.
Mark Buehrle will forever be a part of White Sox history.
The south siders announced Saturday that a statue of Buehrle will be unveiled outside Rate Field this July. The unveiling is part of the festivities celebrating their 2005 World Series Win.
While Buehrle finished his career with the Blue Jays, he spent the first 12 seasons as a workhorse for the White Sox. As well as being a key member of the team that ended the Black Sox curse and won their first championship in 88 years, Buehrle also made four All-Star games, won three gold gloves, and pitched both a no-hitter and a perfect game. He has also had his number 56 retired by the team.
It's an incredible honour, to put a statue up, of me, out there, forever. I guess the number could be unretired and get taken out and put it back into play. But the statue, unless someone tears it down or does something to it, it's always going to be there.
After a season in Miami, which saw him his fourth consecutive Gold Glove award, Buehrle was dealt to the Jays as a part of a massive, 12 player deal. He continued his winning ways for the Blue Jays, as well as his streak of pitching 200 or innings a season. In 2014, he was elected to his fifth and final All-Star game.
In 2015, his last season with the team, and the final one in his career, he went 15-8 and helped lead Toronto to their first postseason appearance in 22 years. He also led the league with four complete games His streak of 14 seasons with 200 innings ended as finished the year just shy at 198.2.
For his career, Buehrle is 214-160 with a 3.81 ERA and 3283.1 innings pitched.
