The Seattle Mariners have designated former Toronto Blue Jays right-handed reliever Casey Lawrence for assignment once again.

Lawrence has already been DFA'd by the Mariners twice this year. After first pitching for the Mariners from 2017-18, sandwiched in between separate stints for the Blue Jays; he also suited up for the St. Louis Cardinals. He returned in 2024 and spent the season at Triple-A Tacoma.
He re-upped with the club on another minor league pact this offseason and has so far pitched 10 innings over two separate stints in the majors, giving up 11 runs, but only four earned runs, in that time.
He took over for Gilbert on Friday after he exited early and ate five innings for the Mariners in an 8-4 loss.
That surely explains why he was DFA'd; he won't be able to pitch for several days, and the Mariners' bullpen would have been thin had they kept him around.
Considering he has already cleared waivers, elected free agency, and re-signed with Seattle thrice this season, there's a good chance that's exactly what will happen again.
Lawrence's most recent appearances came in the first two games of a three game series against the Blue Jays.
Just prior to game three he was designated for assignment and Lao was called up in his place.
Lawrence can serve as a multi-inning reliever for the Mariners, having thrown five innings across three appearances this season.
As Lawrence is out of options, DFAing him and then re-signing him is a creative way for the Mariners to keep him in the fold and cycle through arms, which allows them to keep their bullpen fresh.
He also has the ability to start in a pinch.
While it may seem cumbersome and repetitive, it allows Lawrence to earn a major league salary as well as service time each time he gets re-signed and has his contract selected.
He is 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA in three games this season and 5-4 with a 6.63 ERA with 97 strikeouts and 129 innings pitched in 62 career games.
