Washington made the move in response to their recent signing of reliever Gus Varland - the older brother of Blu Jays flamethrower Louis - after they claimed him off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks.
As Adams had between three and four years service he had the option to reject the assignment and declare free agency.
However, the Nats announced that Adams has indeed accepted his demotion and will report to the minor leagues.
The 29-year old was drafted by Toronto in the third round of the 2017 draft and made his major league debut for the club in 2021.
At the time, the Blue Jays had a surplus of catchers - Adams was one of five on the 40-man roster - and just 12 games into his rookie campaign, he was sent to the Nationals in exchange for reliever Brad Hand, in a somewhat infamous trade.
While he was up-and-down between the major and minor leagues during his first few seasons in the nation’s capital, Adams received significantly more playing time in 2025, getting into a total of 83 games.
Adams considered a glove-first catcher
While his defence tested above-average, his offence struggled, as he hit eight home runs with 24 RBIs while slashing a mere .186/.252/.307
Even though Adams is now off the 40-man, Washington’s catching situation is still somewhat volatile and he could still find his way back onto the team.
