Former Toronto Blue Jays first round draft pick mulling knee surgery

The former first-round draft pick of the Toronto Blue Jays, who made his major league debut with the Athletics last year, has been bothered by a persistent knee issue since the beginning of camp. Now, he is scheduled to meet with a team of doctors to undergo testing.

Much like Ricky Tiedemann, the Blue Jays' current top pitching prospect, iinjuries have been an ongoing problem
for Hoglund throughout his career.

Just prior to being drafted, Hoglund underwent Tommy John surgery in 2021. Then, he missed the second half of last year to a hip issue.

Not only have his health troubles taken their toll on his body, his performance on the mound has also been affected.

In six starts with the A's last year, Hoglund went 1-3 with a 6.40 ERA. Not exactly inspiring for a 26 year old once considered an elite prospect.

Many Blue Jays may remember that after drafting him with the 19th overall pick in 2021 and signing him to a $3.2MM signing bonus, Toronto shipped Hoglund to the Athletics a year later, making him the centre piece of the deal that saw Matt Chapman come to Toronto.

In spite of Hoglund's troubles in 2025, he was still in the mix to win a rotation spot for the A's.

And while it is not yet known if the starter will require surgery, his chances of making the opening roster now appear slim.
