He played 12 seasons, mainly with the Giants, earning 96 saves. Honored in multiple halls of fame, he is survived by his sister, two daughters, and four grandchildren.
RIP Randy Moffitt, a reliable Giants reliever from 1972 to 1981, who's fourth in the team's West Coast history in games pitched, 459. Best year 1973, posting 2.42 ERA with 14 saves in 60 outings. On team's Wall of Fame. Brother of Billie Jean King. He was 76.
Born Randall James Moffitt on October 13, 1948, in Long Beach, California, Randy was the son of Bill and Betty Moffitt.
His path to professional baseball began when he was selected in the first round of the 1970 MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants.
He made his major league debut just two years later, in 1972.
Moffitt became a fixture in the Giants' bullpen throughout the 1970s, playing 10 seasons with the team.
He later spent brief stints with the Houston Astros and the Toronto Blue Jays, wrapping up a 12-year MLB career in which he made 534 appearances, nearly all in relief.
His career stats include a 43-52 record, 96 saves, and a 3.65 ERA.
Moffitt was inducted into the Long Beach State University Athletics Hall of Fame in 1986 and later honored with a place on the San Francisco Giants Wall of Fame in 2008.
Randy Moffitt was part of a family deeply connected to athletics. His sister, Billie Jean King, is one of the most influential figures in tennis history, known both for her on-court achievements and her activism for gender equality in sports.
Randy is survived by Billie Jean and her wife Ilana Kloss, as well as his two daughters, Miranda Harrah (and her husband, Rusty) and Alysha Gosse (and her husband, James), and four grandchildren.
We here at Blue Jays Central give our condolences to all of Randy Moffitt's friends and family.
May he rest in peace.
