The Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 2-1 in their final Spring Training game Sunday afternoon in Dunedin. With the win, the Blue Jays finish atop the Grapefruit League standings with an 18-10-1 record, including 14-1 at home.
With the exception of Tyler Heineman, the Blue Jays trotted out a lineup that could very similar to one they utilize on opening day on Thursday.
Chris Bassitt made his final start of the Spring and looked strong through 5.2 innings of work. While most pitchers use their final start as a tune-up, usually going 2-3 innings, Bassitt wants to get ahead of the game, and is leading a charge to not have the bullpen work too hard and too long early.
Bassitt's final line was two hits, one earned one with four strikeouts and three walks as he threw 92 pitches. His spring ERA was 1.74
The Blue Jays bullpen held the Pirates bats at bay the rest of the day with Brendon Little and Nick Sandlin, both of whom will open the season with the team, each contributing a scoreless.
Minor league pitcher Nate Garkow compiled four strikeouts in just 1.2 innings of work as he picked up the save.
The Blue Jays scored both their runs in the third inning. After a Will Wagner double and Ernie Clement single, Nathan Lukes hit a line drive single to left to bring home Wagner. Clement later scored on a wild pitch.
The Blue Jays will now take a day to get everybody settled in before having team workouts on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Opening day is Thursday afternoon against the Baltimore Orioles. First pitch is scheduled for 3:07pm ET.
