Toronto Blue Jays superstar Vladimir Guerrero Jr has a unique way of getting his message across to others in the clubhouse, but like always George Springer has his back.
Leadership is a shared effort in the Toronto Blue Jays clubhouse, but even superstars have certain players they turn to in order to communicate.
At first base stands the face of the franchise: Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
And if his long-term contract is any indication, he plans to remain the cornerstone of baseball north of the border for years to come.
Even a veteran presence like George Springer recognizes that reality.
«There's no secret - he's our guy,» Springer said recently on MLB Network Radio. «He's a household name, a Top 5 player in this game. When he talks, people listen. He's more of the 'I'll show you' type, and that says a lot.»
Springer has had a front-row seat to Guerrero's rise. The two have been teammates since Springer signed his six-year deal with the Blue Jays ahead of the 2021 season.
Over that span, he has watched Guerrero mature from a young star into one of the game's elite players - a transformation punctuated by a 14-year, $500 million extension that begins in 2026.
But leadership doesn't always come in the same form. While Guerrero commands attention with his play and presence, he sometimes prefers to have Springer help deliver messages in the clubhouse.
During his MLB Network Radio appearance, Springer was told that Guerrero often asks him to relay what he wants to say.
The veteran outfielder laughed at the idea, acknowledging the dynamic - even if he finds it amusing.
«If he's got something to say, he somehow ends up making me say it, which doesn't really make sense,» Springer joked. «But I get what he's saying. I understand his message most of the time. I think maybe I'm just a little louder - which is funny, because he's pretty loud too. But it's fun. I love the guy.»
Partnership highlights the chemistry between two of Toronto's biggest stars
Guerrero may lead by example, but Springer's vocal presence complements him, giving the club a balanced leadership structure built on respect and trust.
Guerrero is coming off another strong campaign in 2025, earning an All-Star nod and finishing 13th in American League MVP voting after hitting .292 with a .381 on-base percentage and .467 slugging percentage, along with 23 home runs and 84 RBI.
Across seven major league seasons, he owns a .288/.366/.495 slash line with 183 home runs and 591 RBI.
His résumé already includes five All-Star selections, an AL Gold Glove at first base, three AL Silver Sluggers and an ALCS MVP award.
Springer, meanwhile, delivered a standout season of his own, batting .309/.399/.560 with 32 home runs and 84 RBI.
A four-time All-Star and three-time Silver Slugger, Springer was also the World Series MVP for Houston in 2017.
Together, the two form the heartbeat of the Blue Jays, one leading with actions, the other amplifying the message, united in their pursuit of bringing a championship back to Toronto.
