Hazel Mae announces rotation for series against the New York Yankees
After today's sweep of the San Francisco Giants, reporter Hazel Mae announced that the Blue Jays will have their top three pitchers on the mound against the Yankees.
According to Mae, the Blue Jays will have Kevin Gausman on the bump Monday vs Carlos Rondon, followed by Max Scherzer vs Schlittler on Tuesday, with Chris Bassitt vs lefty Max Fried on Wednesday to wrap up the series. (Updated)
Blue Jays probables vs. NYY:
Monday: RHP Kevin Gausman (6-7, 4.19 ERA)
Tuesday: RHP Max Scherzer (1-0, 4.70 ERA) v. TBA
Wednesday: RHP Chris Bassitt (10-4, 3.89) v. TBA
Blue Jays vs Yankees pitching probables:
MON: Carlos Rodon vs Kevin Gausman
TUE: Cam Schlittler vs Max Scherzer
WED: Max Fried vs Chris Bassitt
Kevin Gausman has struggled to find some consistency since the beginning of June, posting a 4.95 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 43:22 K:BB through 43.2 innings over his last eight starts.
Hopefully rest over the All-Star break did the veteran 34-year old right-hander some good.
In his last outing
Max Scherzer (1-0) allowed three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out eight over six innings to earn the win over the Athletics.
Scherzer threw a season-high 90 pitches (59 strikes) to secure his first win and first quality start of the season.
He was sharp through five innings before serving up a two-run home run to Nick Kurtz and a solo shot to Tyler Soderstrom in the sixth.
Scherzer is now at a 4.70 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 24:7 K:BB through 23 innings over five starts this year.
In his last outing
Chris Bassitt (10-4) picked up the win in a 4-0 victory over the Giants, allowing 10 hits over 6.1 scoreless innings. He struck out five without walking a batter.
The veteran righty dealt with runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings and again in the sixth and seventh, but Bassitt wriggled off the hook each time to record his eighth quality start of the year.
In the process, he became the first pitcher to give up double-digit hits without being charged with a run since 2015.
Bassitt has a 1.89 ERA in July while winning three straight starts, and he'll look to extend that streak on Wednesday versus the Yankees.
