When the Blue Jays signed Max Scherzer to a one-year deal, many fans were skeptical. The 40 year old future Hall of Famer is a shadow of his former. Yet, many were quick to draw parallels between Scherzer and another aging future Hall of Fame pitcher the Blue Jays signed all the way back in 1992: Jack Morris.

Morris was one of baseball's most dominant pitchers during the 1980's and was coming off a World Series Championship with the Twins in 1991 when he signed a two-year contract with Toronto. He promptly guided them to their first World Series victory in franchise history.
Besides their ages, there are many other similarities between Morris and Scherzer. Both initially gained fame with the Detroit Tigers, both won a World Series with an AL West team before coming to the Blue Jays (when Morris played for Minnesota there was no central division), and both have led the league in both strikeouts and wins.
While Morris was 37 when the Blue Jays signed him and Scherzer is 40, many fans and analysts are viewing this as a good omen for the Blue Jays, albeit somewhat tongue-in-cheek.
Unlike Morris however, the Blue Jays don't need Scherzer to be the ace. Kevin Gausman has that taken care of. But if Scherzer can get back to his pre-2023 level of dominance, the Jays will be in for wild ride with Mad Max.
