Jays cut de Geus, make roster adjustments following Jeff Hoffman signing

A 40 man roster move was needed after the Blue Jays signed Jeff Hoffman earlier today.

The team now has seven days to trade, release, or outright him to the minors.

Unless they can work out a trade, the Jays are likely to place him on waivers. de Geus has already been outrighted once in his career and thus can claim free agency if no team picks him up.

The Blue Jays were one of three teams that de Geus appeared for 2024 after they claimed him off of waivers from the Miami Marlins September 12th. He pitched in two games for them. He started off the year with the Seattle Mariners.

Overall in 2024, de Geus was 0-2 with a 7.15 ERA in 13 games spread across three teams. For the Blue Jays specifically, he went 0-0 with a 15.43 ERA in two games after being picked up late in the season.

For his career de Geus is 3-4 with a 7.48 ERA and 1.712 WHIP in 60 career games.

A low-cost, low-risk depth move at the time the Blue Jays acquired him, de Geus finds himself squeezed out of a job following the recent signing of Jeff Hoffman as a well as dearth of stronger depth options such as Ryan Burr, Eric Lauer, and Eric Pardinho. The Blue Jays also added Josh Walker in December, and it's possible that he begins the season in Triple-A rather than on the Major league roster.

If de Geus goes unclaimed on waivers, except him to declare free agency or for the Jays to release him. It is possible however that a trade could be worked out for a prospect, cash, or Player To Be Named Later.
