Matheson is teaming up with social cataloguing site
GoodReads to give away five copies of his debut work. Fans can enter directly on the GoodReads website for the next ten days. So far, in the first three days, over 1300 people have entered the contest.
The book is essentially an essay collection, capturing history of astute-fans, and examining the lesser-known decisions, people, and moments that have shaped the identity of Canada's national team.
Matheson is a well-respected writer in baseball and Toronto sports circles, not only for his enthusiasm but also for nuanced, well-balanced pieces about the team, which are often sprinkled with his trademark humour.
And there's another, special treat about the book. The forward is written by a
Blue Jays legend and longtime presence in the broadcast booth:
Buck Martinez. Matheson also devotes his last chapter to the catcher-turned-announcer-turned-manager-turned-announcer and regales the tale about how a 1981 trade to Toronto changed Martinez' life.
This is not the first book written about the Blue Jays. Nor will it be the last. But with the team - and its fanbase - in its arguably most tumultuous time in recent years, The Franchise is sure to get fans and the baseball world reading about Canada's team in a new and unique way.
The book releases on June 3rd.
