Toronto Blue Jays shortstop Andrés Giménez gave fans a brief scare on Friday after being hit by a pitch during Venezuela's World Baseball Classic game against the Netherlands.

When the Toronto Blue Jays acquired Andres Gimenez from the Cleveland Guardians in a trade last winter, the organization believed it was bringing in one of the game's premier defensive infielders.
Now firmly entrenched at shortstop, he has an opportunity to demonstrate exactly why he carries that reputation.
The Blue Jays' inability to retain Bo Bichette, who departed in free agency to sign a three-year, $126 million deal with the New York Mets, has effectively cemented Giménez's role on the left side of the infield moving forward.
While Toronto has already begun preparations for the upcoming season at Spring Training, Giménez is currently representing Venezuela in the 2026 World Baseball Classic.
During Friday's matchup against the Netherlands, however, Blue Jays fans held their breath when Giménez was struck by a pitch, raising concerns about a possible injury.
The play came during a key inning in which Venezuela loaded the bases before extending its lead.
Fortunately, the incident does not appear to be serious. Sportsnet reporter Arden Zwelling later confirmed on social media that Giménez avoided any significant damage.
«Andres Gimenez is OK after he was hit by a pitch in Venezuela's WBC game vs Netherlands on Friday,» Zwelling wrote.

Imperative that Gimenez stay healthy in 2026

The update comes as Venezuela has opened the 2026 World Baseball Classic strongly and is widely viewed as one of the tournament's contenders due to its deep roster filled with MLB talent.
Giménez has played a role in that early success, contributing with both his bat and his glove while continuing to showcase the elite defensive ability that has made him one of baseball's top infielders.
As the Blue Jays gear up for a season with high expectations, the club will be hoping Giménez stays healthy throughout Venezuela's run in the tournament before rejoining Toronto ahead of Opening Day.
