The Tigres de Quintana Roo have signed former major league outfielder and DH Willie Calhoun, and former big league pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. The deals were announced in separate posts on MiLB.com and on social media.
Edwards pitched in one game for the San Diego Padres last year, which was his tenth consecutive season of big league action.
The product of Mid-Carolina High School was a 48th round pick of the Texas Rangers in 2011, Edwards passed on his college baseball commitment and ultimately made his major league debut with the Cubs in 2015.
After being designated for assignment by Atlanta early into the 2021 season, Edwards signed a minor league contract with the Toronto Blue Jays, and was selected to their active roster two weeks later.
He appeared in six games with the club before going down with a left oblique strain and was ultimately released by the Blue Jays in August.
He has also suited for the Mariners and Nationals.
In spite of everything,Edwards has had some success and owns a career 3.54 ERA in 296 games. His best season was arguably in 2017, when he appeared in 73 games for the Cubs and had a 2.98 ERA with 94 strikeouts in 66.1 innings.
Edwards isn't the only former Blue Jays player set to be employed by Quintana Roo. In January, Los Tigres brought on former Jays catcher and broadcaster Gregg Zaun as hitting coach.
Only two years removed from a successful season with Washington, Edwards will look to find himself and begin his comeback to the major leagues.
