The Milwaukee Brewers have designated former Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Steward Berroa for assignment.
According to a team announcement, the Brewers designated outfielder Steward Berroa for assignment prior to today's game versus the Royals.
Berroa, 26, joined the Brewers in July in a cash deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
He appeared in just two games for Milwaukee last season, going hitless in six plate appearances but managing to steal a base after drawing a walk.
Overall, Berroa has accumulated only 51 major league plate appearances between the Brewers and the Blue Jays, the team that originally signed him. In that brief stint, he has posted a .167 batting average with a .314 on-base percentage and a .190 slugging percentage, including one double, eight walks, and six stolen bases.
In the minors, Berroa has shown more promise
Over parts of four Triple-A seasons, the switch-hitter has a line of .255/.353/.373 across 673 plate appearances, hitting 12 home runs, 25 doubles, and three triples, while successfully stealing 69 of 86 bases (an 80.2% success rate).
Statcast ranks his sprint speed in the 89th percentile.
Primarily a center fielder in the minors, Berroa has more than 1,000 innings at both corner outfield positions over nine professional seasons.

In his limited MLB action, he has earned above-average defensive grades, posting 5 Defensive Runs Saved and 3 Outs Above Average in just 120 innings.
This is Berroa’s final minor league option year, making him an intriguing option for teams seeking speed, defensive versatility, and a patient approach at the plate. Any team claiming him could assign him to Triple-A without exposing him to waivers.
The Brewers now have five days to trade Berroa or place him on waivers.
Since the waiver process takes 48 hours, the outcome of his designation for assignment should be known by this time next week.
