McGuire to compete for back-up role in Milwaukee
McGuire is a former first round draft pick and one-time top prospect with the Pittsburgh Pirates. While he never hit for much power, he had decent surface numbers for a catcher. However, his calling card was always his defence.
After reaching as high as Double-A Altoona, he was shipped to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2016 as part of a package for former number one pitcher Drew Hutchison.
It was with Toronto that he made his major league debut and was the defensive end of the Blue Jays' catching tandem along with the more offensively-strong Danny Jansen
However, keeping them both long term wasn't sustainable - especially with the emergence of Alejandro Kirk - and McGuire was dealt to the Chicago White Sox just prior to opening day in 2022.
He also played for the Boston Red Sox and the Chicago Cubs as well.
Will compete for back-up catching job
The Brewers currently only have two catchers on the 40-man roster. While William Contreras is the undisputed number one catcher, 23-year old Jeferson Quero has yet to make his major league debut after battling injuries last season.
And while Milwaukee has three other catchers as non-roster invitees, McGuire will be the only one with big league experience under his belt, which could him an edge in winning the back-up job come spring.
