Ever since the Toronto Blue Jaysand Vladimir Guerrero Jr. failed to reach a deal on a contract extension, many were left wondering what the star first baseman's number was.
During a Bleacher Report stream on February 26th, Jon Heyman, baseball writer and insider for the New York Post, speculated that that number is at least $600MM.
Not only is this far ahead of Spoctrac's projection of Vladdy as a $38MM player, those who play first base, historically a offensive-first position with weak defence, generally don't receive that sort of contract, no matter how good they are.
At this point with Soto at $765 million, I think it's probably gonna have to be in the sixes to sign [Guerrero ], I think probably $600 million, plus. - Jon Heyman
Earlier in the offseason, Hall of Famer David Oritz - a close friend of Guerrero - has said that Vladdy was worth $585MM. With the length of the contract postulated between 12-15 years, that would put Vlad's worth at around $45MM. A $600MM would further increase the AAV.
Much of what Vladdy will earn will depend on his results during the upcoming season. Either way, he find team's hesitant to fork over his asking price.
