We're one game into the 2025 season and the Blue Jays offensive woes appear to be back. After a strong showing down in Florida during Spring Training, the bats fell completely silent during a 12-2 drubbing at the hands of the Baltimore Orioles.
The Orioles had six home runs; the Blue Jays had four hits total. That isn't sustainable in the long, or even short term.
Yes, Jose Berrios didn't look like himself giving up three of those home runs, but he has a track record of success. The lack of offence, has been a longer, ongoing concern for the Blue Jays and if they expect to compete with any level of regularity, their bats needs come alive. And quickly.
A year ago, Toronto finished 23rd in baseball in runs scored (671) and 26th in home runs (156). That's simply not sustainable.
«That's two three-run homers with two outs. That's tough to come back from, and they didn't miss mistakes, Everyone's going to get mistakes over the course of a game. Today, they didn't miss them, and the final score is the final score.» - John Schneider
The Blue Jays did get something though. New second baseman Andres Gimenezhitting cleanup, but known more for his glove than his bat, launched a two-run home run to right field. That would be the only runs the Blue Jays got all day.
It's one game and Blue Jays fans shouldn't be hitting the panic button just yet. There is plenty of time for things to go right and adjustments to be made.
