The Hot Stove season is picking up as many more free agents are coming off the board.
Yesterday afternoon, it was Cody Bellinger who agreed to return to the New York Yankees on a five year deal. A few hours later it was announced that the Los Angeles Angels were also bringing back a major player, fulfilling one of their off-season goals.
Just after Christmas, it was reported that the Toronto Blue Jays were showing interest in infielder Yoan Moncada and while it was unknown how far talks advanced, the Blue Jays were listed among the third baseman's suitors.
While the attention decreased after the Blue Jays signed Japanese phenom Kazuma Okamoto, there was still conceivably room to bring Moncada on board.
All that has ended now with the news that Moncada is returning to the Halos on a one-year, $4MM deal.
BREAKING: Third baseman Yoan Moncada and the Los Angeles Angels are in agreement on a free agent contract, per sources.
Moncada performed reasonably well for the Angels last year, though spent significant time on the injured list, ultimately only appearing in 84 games.
If his injuries are behind him, he should figure to get the bulk of playing time at the Hot Corner, especially with Anthony Rendon now officially out of the picture.
Moncada will get majority of playing time, could sit against lefties
Although he is a switch hitter, he has hit better from the left side of the plate for the majority of his career. While he is also expected to receive the majority of playing time at third base, he could occasionally sit against LHP's, giving at-bats to youngsters Vaughn Grissom and Denzer Guzman.
Moncada slashed 234/.336/.448 with 12 home runs last year.
