Sanchez initially joined the Red Sox in August after being designated for the assignment by the
Wilyer Abreu' class='lien_marqueur' target='_blank' rel='noopener'>Toronto Blue Jays.
He was previously designated twice by Toronto. In June, he was DFA'd, released, then signed to a new contract. He was added back to the team in July, before designated again.
This is also Sanchez' second time being cut by Boston. After being claimed on August 11, he made his debut a couple days only to be DFA'd within the week.
The Red Sox today reinstated outfielder Wilyer Abreu from the 10-day injured list. To make room on the active roster, Boston designated catcher Ali Sanchez for assignment
He was then claimed by the
New York Mets who then traded him back to the Red Sox for cash.
While he has the right to become a free agent due to previously being outrighted, it's possible that Sanchez sticks around, providing depth at Triple-A as the Red Sox fight to hold onto the 2nd wild card position.
Ali Sanchez is out of options and will have a big decision to make in the near future
He is also out of options, which is why he can't merely be sent down.
Well regarded for his glove work, his bat hasn't quite caught up. In 50 career games, Sanchez is slashing a mere .183/.220/.233/ with no home runs and four RBIs.
The Red Sox currently boast a catching duo of Carlos Narvaez and Connor Wong, but it's likely that Sanchez will accept his minor league assignment and be ready in Worcester.
Sanchez appeared in a total of eight games across two stints for the Blue Jays this season.
