Roster Moves: Toronto Blue Jays surprisingly release two players on Thursday

The Toronto Blue Jays have released infielder Rainer Nunez and catcher Christian Bethancourt on Thursday.
On Wednesday the Blue Jays signed infielder Buddy Kennedy to a minor league contract and later signed former Rays catcher Rene Pinto to a minor league pact.
Releasing both Rainer Nunez and Christian Bethancourt today were the corresponding moves to make room on the Buffalo Bisons roster.
Interesting to see Rainer Nunez let go. Turns 25 in December and has really struggled in Triple-A the last couple months, but showed signs of putting it together earlier in the year and posted a max EV of 119.6 mph this season.
Rainer Nunez is a 24 year old first baseman, who was the 26th ranked prospect in the organization according to MLB Pipeline back in 2023, but has fallen unranked.
Nunez posted a 114 wRC+, had 7 homeruns, 30 RBIs, a .252 batting average, .323 on base percentage and a .788 OPS in 81 games this season. He strikes out at an average 23.4% rate. He is now a free agent.
Bethancourt, 33, had 7 homeruns and 21 RBIs with a .173 batting average and .219 on base percentage in 58 games this season.
Blue Jays released Rainer Nunez and Christian Bethancourt today. Also signed René Pinto.
Bethancourt split last season between the Miami Marlins and the Chicago Cubs, hitting .209 with five home runs and 22 RBI in 62 games.
In 428 career MLB games with the Marlins, Cubs, Atlanta Braves, Oakland Athletics, and Tampa Bay Rays, he has batted .229 with 60 doubles, 35 home runs, 135 RBI, and a total of 58 runners caught stealing.
