In the lead up to opening day, there has been mention of former Blue Jays who have signed on with new teams, whether through trades or minor-league deals. But what about our friends playing overseas?
Here is a look at few former Blue Jays finding success in Japan.
In April 2021, the Blue Jays acquired Beasley from the Arizona Diamondbacks for cash after being a 30th round pick of the Angles in 2017. Beasley ended up spending two seasons with the Blue Jays, going 0-1 with a 5.92 ERA in 17 games and 32 strikeouts in 24.1 innings. He signed with the Hanshin Tigers prior to 2023.
There was a time when Kay was a future ace for the Blue Jays. A former first round draft pick of the New York Mets in 2016, Kay was acquired by the Blue Jays along with Simeon Woods-Richardson in the deal that sent Marcus Stroman to Queens in 2019. He made his debut with the team that September.
He ultimately spend parts of four years with Toronto, going 4-2 with a 5.28 ERA in 28 games, including seven starts. He was designated for assignment at the end of 2022 following the free agent signing of another former New York Met: Chris Bassitt.
Oh, what could have been for the Blue Jays. Osuna burst onto the scene as a 20 year old in 2015, and quickly became a lights-out closer, even earning an All-Star appearance in 2017. He still ranks fourth all-time in Blue Jays history with 104 saves.
However, Osuna couldn't stay out of trouble. After being suspended for violating the league's joint domestic violence policy, he was shipped to the Astros. While he was the league leader in saves in 2019, his relationship with the club soured after refusing to undergo Tommy John surgery and opting for the rest and rehab route instead.
He was placed on waivers at the end of 2020 and played in his native Mexico before signing a contract with the Chiba Lotte Marines. He now plays for Fukoka. He's had success, but his major league career is likely over. What could have been.
