One thing is known about long-time closer Aroldis Chapman; he throws hard, regularly reaching triple digits with his fastball. But soon there might be another pitcher on a big league mound who can throw even harder. Meet Blue Jays prospect Colby Martin.
The 24-year old, currently at Single-A Dunedin, was actually drafted as a 2nd baseman in the 16th round last year.
While his numbers didn't play anybody away, while at Shenandoah University, he threw 1.2 innings while hitting .390., enough to draw the attention of scouts.
The Jays almost didn't get a chance to draft him. Martin very nearly signed with the Padres as a UFA in 2023, but walked away after the results of an MRI.
«I'm not an emotional guy, but as soon as I walked out of the complex I called my Mom and I was just crying I was defeated.»
After that, he did at Southwestern, where he posted a 4.41 ERA. That's when the Blue Jays swooped in.
While he struggled in his first year out of the gate, that was to be somewhat expected as he is new to pitching. Fortunately, he seems to have turned a corner this year. He has yet to allow a run in 9.2 innings while walking four and striking out eight. It's not perfect by any means, but it's a step in the right direction.
The Blue Jays farm system has struggled to develop homegrown pitchers in recent years and so if Martin is able to put up steady numbers, he could greatly improv his value an find himself in the higher levels of the minors before too long.
