The product of Quebec City was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Blue Jays in 2021. After a quick cameo in the Florida Coast League, he spent most of 2022 and all of 2023 in Dunedin, before moving up to Vancouver last year.
He was just recently placed on the development list by Double-A New Hampshire.
The development was introduced in 2021 as a tool to help manage prospects. t allows organizations to place players on the list for developmental or conditioning reasons, rather than for injury or disciplinary issues. While it is more common for pitchers, position players to find themselves on there occasionally as well.
Before signing with the Jays, Deschamps was a standout in Academie De Baseball Canada, which now competes in the Canadian Premier Baseball League. For his final year of high school, he transferred to the TNXL Academy in Florida, which offered a more competitive environment.
While Deschamps doesn't hit for a ton of power, he has a high on-base percentage, and makes a lot of contact. His defensive side is even better and he has a reputation as a superior game caller, with a .986 fielding percentage across three leagues in 2024.
While he has work to do, including getting over the stigma of being an undrafted free agent, Deschamps is still just 22. The fact that is already in Double-A speaks to how much the organization is valuing him.
With
Alejandro Kirk now a Blue Jay through the 2030 season, the organization can take their time with Deschamps. They don't need him to be a number one catcher, that's the Captain's job for the foreseeable future. But if Deschamps can continue his rise through the ranks, he has the potential to be a solid back up.
He will be an interesting player to watch over the next couple of seasons.
