The Toronto Blue Jays secure the top spot in Major League Baseball with another win against the Detroit Tigers.
For the first time in more than 30 years, the Blue Jays own the best record in Major League Baseball four months into the season.
Thanks to a 6-2 win over the Detroit Tigers on Friday night, Canada's lone MLB team, already the top squad in the American League, improved to 62-42 and broke a tie with the National League's Milwaukee Brewers to lead the majors.
It's the first time since 1992 that the Blue Jays have held the league's best record this late into the season. That team famously went on to win the first of Toronto's two consecutive World Series titles.
The noteworthy win came just one day after Toronto's 11-4 win over Detroit moved them past the Houston Astros for first place in the AL.
The Blue Jays have been on a heater in the month of July leading up to the top spot in Major League Baseball
All the while, July has been quite a fruitful month for the Blue Jays as they're now an MLB-best 16-4 after Friday's victory.
They've led the majors in runs per game, OBP, OPS and strikeout percentage, per Sportsnet stats. Toronto's also won 18 of its last 22 outings, including seven of its last eight and three straight.
This is the best swing I've seen from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in a while. Simple, easy power. Really feels like he's got a heater brewing. #BlueJays - Keegan Matheson
Friday's win over the Tigers was led by the bats of Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who went 2-of-5 at the plate with two runs and an RBI off a fifth-inning double, Bo Bichette, who drove in a team-best two runs with a double of his own in the very next at-bat.
Jose Berrios did his part on the mound as well, giving up just two earned runs through six innings while striking out six on two walks.
