Three reasons why the Blue Jays shouldn't sign Nick Castellanos.

Following his release from the Philadelphia Phillies, many are musing whether the Toronto Blue Jays will pursue Nick Castellanos. Here's why he isn't a good fit.
The Phillies released OF Nick Castellanos, the team announced
The Blue Jays have mor than enough outfielders
Including Anthony Santander and George Springer, the Blue Jays currently have eight outfielders on the 40-man roster.
That number also includes the newly-acquired Jesus Sanchez.
And while Castellanos offers more offensive upside and hits from the right side, putting him in the field, will lessen the Blue Jays overall effectiveness.
His other position is third base, which the Blue Jays also have covered. Ditto for DH.
He is a poor defender
While Castellanos has always been known for his bat, having hit more than 20 home runs six times, and more than 30 homers once, the same can't be said for his glove. In 2025, he was rated as -12 Outs Above Average (OAA), which was the lowest among all qualified outfielders.
That doesn't seem worth it for the Blue Jays
His clubhouse presence
The Blue Jays pride themselves on having one of the most cohesive and positive clubhouse environments throughout baseball.
Signing Castellanos would negatively affect this. It has been reported that during his time in Philly, he brought beer into the dugout after being pulled from a game due to poor performance and had it out with manager Rob Thomson.
That is not the kind of attitude the Jays need.

Phillies still on hook for salary

It was no secret that the Phillies had been trying to unload Castellanos. That they outright released speaks to just how untenable the situation had become.
Due to the fact that the Phils are still on the hook for his $20MM salary, there is a strong possibility that a team will take a flyer on him.
However, after the beer incident, the number of teams has likely dwindled.
There is still a month before opening day.
