The American League best Detroit Tigers (30-15) take on the Toronto Blue Jays (21-23) this afternoon at Rogers Centre. Tigers rookie Reese Olson toes the rubber versus Blue Jays opener Eric Lauer on what looks to be a bullpen day for the Toronto. Reese Olson gets the ball today for the Tigers. Olson (4-3) took the loss against the Rangers in hios last outing allowing three runs on seven hits and one walk with five strikeouts over four innings.
Olson surrendered a two-run homer in the second inning, and then yielded another run in the third. It was the 25-year-old's shortest outing of the season, as he generated only eight whiffs on 83 pitches and dealt with frequent traffic on the basepaths.
He'll carry a 3.38 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 45:18 K:BB across 42.2 innings into a road matchup with the Blue Jays next weekend.
Eric Lauer is the opener on this bullpen day for Toronto. In his last outing Lauer retired the only batter he faced in a Blue Jays' 8-3 loss to the Angels.
After working four innings as the primary pitcher behind opener Yariel Rodriguez in his Blue Jays debut April 30, Lauer was deployed in a more traditional relief role.
The southpaw recorded the final out of the eighth inning, while Jose Urena covered 4.1 innings as Toronto's newest fifth starter. Urena has already been named the Blue Jays' starter for Sunday's game in Seattle.
