As the Toronto Blue Jays gear up for their final playoff push, some reinforcements could be on the horizon.
Speaking to reporters ahead of Monday's series opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates, manager John Schneider provided updates on a handful of injured Blue Jays players.
Most notably, prized off-season signing Anthony Santander has continued to work through his hitting progression in Toronto and will join the team later this week in Miami to continue his ramp-up.
Anthony Santander (shoulder) is working through his hitting progression in Toronto; he'll meet up with the Blue Jays in Miami this weekend to continue ramping up.
A mid September return for Anthony Santander appears to be on the horizon
Santander has been on the injured list since late May with shoulder inflammation. After a long period of not picking up a bat, the 30-year-old returned to swinging last week.
Santander was looked upon this year to provide some middle-of-the batting order depth and home run power.
However unfortunately, fans have got little chance to see his talents due to being limited to 184 at-bats which has seen him hit for a 179 average with 33 hits, 14 runs scored, six home runs and 18 RBI's.
Recently,
Blue Jays fans heard some optimistic news when it was made official that Santander has started hitting balls off a tee and will soon be taking batting practice. With the news, a possible late August or September return has not been ruled out, which would be an obvious big shot in the arm for the Jays.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider recently said if all progresses well a mid September return would be likely.
With Santander hitting off a tee and travelling to meet the club, it looks like Jays fans will once again get to see him in action this year.
