The Toronto Blue Jays are playing their cards close to their chest when it comes to rookie right-hander Trey Yesavage's progress and possible spring debut.
Trey Yesavage returned to game action Wednesday at the Toronto Blue Jays' player development complex, pitching two innings against minor-league hitters in a simulated game.
The 22-year-old threw 35 pitches and allowed five runs on three hits, including two home runs, one each to Jay Harry and Jackson Hornung. He also issued two walks and did not record a strikeout.
Trey Yesavage threw 35 pitches today in a two-inning simulated game against minor leaguers. The Blue Jays have yet to decide when Yesavage might appear in a Grapefruit League game.
Yesavage's outing was watched by several members of Toronto's brass, including manager John Schneider, pitching coach Pete Walker and general manager Ross Atkins.
His first inning proved difficult. The 6-foot-4 right-hander faced four batters without recording an out before the top half of the inning was ended early, a common feature in simulated games designed to manage workloads.
In the second inning, Yesavage walked the first batter before getting a fielder's choice on a ground ball to second base. Harry followed and capped the outing with a two-run home run.
Command appeared to be a challenge at times for Yesavage, who missed arm-side on several pitches during his first appearance of any kind this spring.
Blue Jays aren't focused on the results at this stage of camp
Trey Yesavage completed his 2-inning simulated game at the PDC this afternoon, tossing 35 pitches. Results were rough (5 runs on 3 hits, including 2 HRs, & 2 walks), but those don't matter much right now. It's all about getting his work in.
Afterward, Schneider emphasized that the priority is ensuring the young pitcher remains healthy while building up his workload before spring camp concludes in about two weeks.
«Just good to be back out there,» Yesavage said. «Defence behind me, facing a lineup, and I'm happy just getting to play baseball.»
Yesavage is scheduled for a recovery day Thursday following the outing.
The Blue Jays are still determining the next step in his schedule but intend to keep him on a starter's routine.
That means his next appearance, whether another simulated game or a potential Grapefruit League debut, could come as early as next Tuesday.
