Toronto Blue Jays broadcaster Joe Siddall has steadily positioned himself as the natural successor to Buck Martinez.

A Windsor, Ontario native, Joe Siddall’s path to baseball wasn’t a straight line.
He initially attended Central Michigan University on a full football scholarship as a quarterback before signing with the Montreal Expos in 1987.
Here’s 17-year-old Joe Siddall (carrying two bats) walking away from the cage after a tryout with the #BlueJays (circa 1985). Joe eventually accepted a football scholarship at Central Michigan University.
As a player, Siddall was a defense-first catcher, valued for his pitch framing and his ability to guide young pitchers through games.
After his playing days, Siddall spent 12 seasons (2002–2013) as a batting practice pitcher for his hometown Tigers, further deepening his understanding of the game before making the transition to broadcasting with the Blue Jays.
When Buck Martinez announced his retirement from the broadcast booth, Blue Jays fans were first hit with a wave of nostalgia — quickly followed by the inevitable question: who would replace him?

With Buck Martinez officially riding into the sunset, the seamless transition has arrived for Siddall

Siddall began his broadcasting career in 2014 as a radio analyst for the Blue Jays on the Sportsnet Radio Network, a move that followed the heartbreaking loss of his son, Kevin.
In 2018, he transitioned to television, replacing Gregg Zaun as the primary studio analyst on Blue Jays Central.
Congratulations Joe Siddall on being the #BlueJays Central TV analyst. Welcome!👏👏👏
As Martinez gradually reduced his workload to roughly 100 games per season, Siddall became his steady and reliable understudy.
That shift led to a reconfiguration of responsibilities, with Siddall moving between the Blue Jays Central studio and the game broadcast booth, splitting time across approximately half of the 130 games he works each year.
Along the way, Siddall has quietly emerged as one of the most trusted voices in the team’s coverage.
Joe Siddall appreciation tweet. He’s very good.
His detailed breakdowns — paired with honest, transparent criticism when warranted — have long stood out in studio segments, and that same insight has translated seamlessly to live game analysis.
While Siddall values both roles, he clearly thrives on the immediacy and nuance of calling games in real time.
His steady rise from radio, to studio, to the broadcast booth reflects not only experience earned, but a succession plan that feels both thoughtful and seamless for the Blue Jays.
