The Toronto Blue Jays are navigating a transition in their clubhouse leadership following a shakeup at the top of the players’ union.

After veteran pitcher Chris Bassitt signed with the Baltimore Orioles, the Toronto Blue Jays lost one of its key voices in union matters.
Shortly thereafter, Tony Clark stepped down as executive director of the MLBPA, creating further uncertainty.
As a result, centre fielder Daulton Varsho has stepped into a more prominent role with the union, at least on an interim basis, according to Sportsnet's Shi Davidi.
Varsho, who has served as an alternate player representative dating back to his time with the Arizona Diamondbacks, suddenly found himself balancing the responsibilities of his playing career with the evolving union landscape.
He spent Tuesday processing the latest developments while also preparing to participate in an afternoon executive board call.
In recent seasons, the Blue Jays have benefited from strong union leadership within their clubhouse.
Bassitt has been a member of the MLBPA’s executive subcommittee, and the team previously rostered experienced subcommittee members such as Max Scherzer and Marcus Semien.
Their presence provided Toronto with seasoned guidance on labour matters and league-wide issues.

Now, the organization will look to establish its next full-time player representative in the coming weeks, though Varsho is expected to remain heavily involved regardless of the final decision.
For Varsho, the opportunity carries meaningful value.
“It’s nice to understand both the business side of baseball and the playing side of baseball,” he said, emphasizing the importance of players educating themselves beyond the field.
He also expressed interest in preparing the next wave of union voices within the clubhouse.
Varsho mentioned Trey Yesavage as a candidate to begin training as an alternate representative, while Tyler Heineman and Davis Schneider — who served as an alternate last season — are also expected to play important roles.
“It’s nice to get the younger generation to be like, ‘hey, we should start knowing this,’” Varsho added.
This spring, both Varsho and right fielder George Springer have spoken with manager John Schneider about assuming greater leadership responsibilities.
Schneider paid close attention last year to how Bassitt and Scherzer approached union matters, recognizing the broader impact veteran players can have beyond their on-field contributions.
“I eventually want to get to that level — looking after other players and not just yourself, trying to grow the game the right way,” Schneider said.
As the Blue Jays adjust to changes within both their roster and the players’ union, a new generation of leadership appears ready to step forward.
