Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Louis Varland is entering spring training energized for his first full campaign with the reigning American League champions.
As Louis Varland reports to big-league camp, he does so as perhaps the most intriguing piece in the Toronto Blue Jays bullpen.
Here’s Louis Varland throwing a side in #BlueJays camp this morning:
Now in his second year since shifting from the rotation to relief work, the 26-year-old offers manager John Schneider and the coaching staff a flexible, high-leverage option capable of filling multiple roles.
Down the stretch last season, Varland evolved into one of the bullpen’s most indispensable arms.
As Toronto surged into what became its longest postseason run in 32 years, he was repeatedly called upon in critical moments — and delivered.

Between stops with Minnesota and Toronto, Varland logged a career-high 72.2 innings during the regular season, his first year working exclusively out of the bullpen. He then added another 16 innings in October, cementing his reputation as a durable, reliable presence.
In fact, he appeared in 15 of the club’s 18 playoff games, setting a franchise record for most appearances in a single postseason.
Despite the heavy workload, Varland remained effective, consistently pounding the zone and keeping games within reach when the stakes were highest.
Veteran starter Kevin Gausman infamously called the Varland trade “one of the greatest” moves this organization has ever made, and you’ll have a tough time finding anyone who’ll argue against that claim.

What makes Varland especially valuable is the organization’s understanding of how to deploy him.
Having proven he can shoulder a significant workload — thanks in part to his background as a starter — he’s an ideal candidate to serve as the bullpen’s primary fireman, entering games with runners on base and neutralizing threats before they spiral.
His versatility also gives Toronto options late in games. Varland has shown he can handle any matchup and any inning, and he could easily slide into save situations when needed, particularly if closer Jeff Hoffman is unavailable.
If everything breaks right health-wise, the Blue Jays could feature a formidable quartet anchoring the back end of the bullpen: Varland alongside Yimi Garcia, Tyler Rogers — who leads all major-league relievers with 374 appearances and 378.1 innings since 2021 — and Hoffman.
That group has the potential to shorten games dramatically.
Of course, depth will remain crucial over the grind of a 162-game season.
Others in the bullpen must contribute to prevent overuse, especially considering Hoffman has set new career highs in both appearances and innings in each of the past two years.
Still, the foundation is firmly in place. With Varland under team control through 2030, he represents both present value and long-term stability at the heart of Toronto’s revamped bullpen — a key reason optimism is running high as a new season approaches.
