The hits keep on coming for the Toronto Blue Jays so far in 2026, just not the kind they need.
Excitement surrounding the Toronto Blue Jays’s World Series rematch with the Los Angeles Dodgers evaporated quickly on Monday night when Max Scherzer left the game with an injury, adding pressure on an already overworked pitching staff
Scherzer exited after only two innings, later revealing that he is dealing with right forearm tendinitis.
Despite the setback, Scherzer is determined to remain in the Blue Jays’ rotation.
“I’ve been dealing with this little issue for a couple of weeks, but it’s never been presenting when I’ve been throwing the ball; it’s actually been hurting more when I’m at home,” Scherzer said. “I didn’t want to go to the IL, I just don’t think this is an IL issue where I need to miss two starts. I just needed to guard it today, so we came up with a plan that the most I would do was three innings, 50 pitches.”
The 41-year-old said he pulled himself from Monday’s game to protect his arm for his next start this weekend against the Minnesota Twins. His final line: two innings pitched, two earned runs on two hits.
In other injury news, catcher Alejandro Kirk is set to undergo surgery.
Kirk will have an operation on his fractured left thumb on Tuesday, Blue Jays manager John Schneider confirmed.
"We'll know the timeline after the surgery," Schneider said.

Schneider also provided an update on injured starter Cody Ponce, who is meeting with doctors in Los Angeles on Monday to determine next steps for his knee injury. An update on Ponce’s status is expected Tuesday.
Ponce suffered a right ACL sprain in his first start of the season when he fell chasing a ground ball and had to be carted off the field.
Meanwhile, Trey Yesavage will make another Single-A rehab start with the Dunedin Blue Jays on Thursday.
Yesavage, recovering from shoulder impingement, threw his first rehab start with Dunedin on Friday, giving up one run on a single hit—an inside-the-park home run—while striking out three and walking one over 2.2 innings against the Bradenton Marauders, a Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate. Thirty of the 44 pitches he threw were strikes.
That outing triggered a 30-day clock for Yesavage to return to the majors, though the Blue Jays aren’t certain he’ll need the full timeframe.
Finally, pitchers Jose Berrios, Yimi Garcia, Shane Bieber, and Patrick Corbin are all scheduled to throw on Tuesday.
Discussions are ongoing regarding where Corbin’s next outing will take place.
