Toronto Blue Jays left-handed reliever Mason Fluharty was forced to exit Saturday’s game against the Athletics in the seventh inning after being struck by line drives from consecutive hitters.
Following the game, manager John Schneider told reporters that Mason Fluharty suffered a contusion to his right knee. X-rays came back negative, and there’s a chance the young pitcher could be available for Sunday’s series finale, according to Keegan Matheson.
Fluharty feels good, should be ready for tomorrow, per John Schneider
Fluharty entered the game to begin the top of the seventh inning with Toronto holding a 2–1 lead, facing left-handed batter Jeff McNeil.
After a five-pitch at-bat, McNeil sent a sharp comebacker up the middle that struck Fluharty on the right thigh. The ball trickled toward third base, allowing McNeil to reach safely on an infield single.
After a brief visit from Schneider and head trainer Jose Ministral, Fluharty threw a few warm-up pitches and indicated he was able to continue.
However, the very next batter, Max Muncy, hit another hard liner back toward the mound on the third pitch he saw.
This time, the ball struck Fluharty squarely on the right knee and again deflected toward third base for another infield hit.
Fluharty was visibly limping as he got to his feet and ultimately needed assistance leaving the field, having faced just two batters in his season debut.
Brendon Little replaced him out of the bullpen but later surrendered a go-ahead grand slam to Shea Langeliers, giving the Athletics a 6–2 lead.
Fluharty, who made his MLB debut on April 1, 2025, had a solid rookie season, earning the trust of the coaching staff.
He appeared in 11 postseason games during the Blue Jays’ run to the World Series and finished the year with a 4.44 ERA and 56 strikeouts over 52.2 innings pitched.
