Toronto Blue Jays Max Scherzer has strong debut in win over Phillies

Toronto Blue Jays starter Max Scherzer looked sharp in his first appearance of the spring, making his debut against the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday.
Veteran right-hander Max Scherzer delivered four scoreless innings as the Toronto Blue Jays edged the Philadelphia Phillies 1-0, improving their Spring Training record to 4-8-2.
Scherzer allowed no hits and no runs over his outing, recording one strikeout and one walk. His fastball averaged 94.0 mph and reached a top speed of 95.8 mph.
His lone strikeout came against Phillies outfielder Brandon Marsh, who went down swinging on an 85.6 mph changeup in a full-count situation.

The future hall of famer worked through 4 efficient no-hit innings in his first taste of Spring.
His stuff looks basically the same as last season, making him a potential backend starter for Toronto entering the season
Scherzer looking to earn a spot in the back end of the rotation
Now 41 years old, Scherzer is a three-time Cy Young Award winner who rejoined Toronto after returning on a one-year, $3 million contract this offseason.
He originally signed with the Blue Jays as a free agent prior to the 2025 campaign.
During the 2025 season, Scherzer made 17 appearances for Toronto, finishing with a 5.19 ERA while recording 82 strikeouts, 23 walks, and allowing 87 hits.
He also played a role in the Blue Jays' postseason run, making three starts during the club's journey to the World Series.
Toronto returns to action Sunday with split-squad games. Cody Ponce is scheduled to start on the road against the Baltimore Orioles, while Kevin Gausman will take the mound in Dunedin against the Detroit Tigers.
The road matchup begins at 1:05 p.m. ET, while the home game is scheduled for its usual 1:07 p.m. ET start.
